THE RESULTS OF USING THE MULTIMEDIA EDUCATIONAL MANUAL «AUSCULTATION OF THE LUNGS» IN THE COURSE OF TEACHING PROPAEDEUTICS OF INTERNAL DISEASES

Abstract

The improvement of digital pedagogy is important for the progressive development of educational activities in medical universities and academies. The main factor in this development is the provision of educational programs and disciplines with a sufficient number of high-quality multimedia and electronic manuals, especially in the most difficult sections. One of such sections of the discipline “Propaedeutics of internal diseases” is auscultation, or listening, of the lungs. This section contains an extensive information base, which makes it difficult to assimilate the material with a conservative approach to the educational process. Students also need to be able to independently perform lung auscultation in patients with various lung diseases, which is not always possible in real educational practice. Both theoretical and practical aspects of this method of examination of the patient can be implemented in appropriate electronic and multimedia manuals, simulators and simulators. One of these manuals has already been introduced into the educational process, which has significantly increased the effectiveness of the educational process and the ability of students to master practical skills.

Conclusion. The manual “Lung Auscultation” developed at SamSMU can increase the efficiency of assimilation of the material, which will improve the formation of competencies among students in terms of mastering the most important component of a physical examination of a patient – auscultation and aimed at a full-fledged examination of the patient, conducting diagnostic search, interpreting the data obtained, making the correct diagnosis and prescribing optimal treatment.

Against this background, interest in the disciplines taught begins to grow, students appear who want to study surgery in depth and know the level of their own training. One of the options for midterm control of knowledge is the olympiad, which, on the one hand, is a platform for competition in skills, a tool for self-assessment of acquired knowledge, as well as midterm control of theoretical knowledge and practical skills by a teacher, on the other hand, it is an event that creates a competitive environment for solving professional problems, tasks.

The aim – study the results of the olympiad in surgical disciplines among specialty students in General Medicine.

Material and methods. The intra-university olympiad “II Winter Quest in Surgery and Emergency Conditions” was organized and held among students of 3–5 years of specialty in the specialty 05.31.01 General Medicine, for which 6 teams of 4 people of 3–5 years were formed, of which 2 teams were formed of foreign students of 4–5 years studying in English. The event includes the following competition tasks: “Surgical instruments”; “Desmurgy”; “Preparation of the surgical field, dressing of the postoperative wound”; “Surgical sutures”; “Basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation”; “FAST protocol in emergency surgery”; “Standardized patient”; MedBox quiz. For each task, evaluation criteria were developed, according to which the jury members worked. The aim of the olympiad is to develop interest in practical activities in the field of surgical disciplines, create conditions to support gifted students, as well as popularize scientific knowledge and innovative technologies in the field of surgical practice. Objectives of the olympiad: midterm control of knowledge and practical skills; increasing the level of acquisition of knowledge and practical skills in the field of surgery.

Results. Participants demonstrated different levels of preparation in the “Practical skills” block. Most teams successfully completed the competition tasks of this block, but identifying surgical instruments was difficult for many. Almost all students demonstrated a decent level of knowledge of asepsis and antiseptics, and were able to bandage various wounds and apply bandages. Proficiency in surgical suture techniques is at different levels: 2 teams showed a high technical level, 3 – average and 1 – low. In the “Clinical Thinking” block, which included the competitions “Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation”, “FAST-Protocol in Emergency Surgery”, “Standardized Patient”, the participants showed a high level of preparation, the scores in each competition differed little between teams, which created conditions for high competition. In the block “Theoretical preparation” – quiz “MedBox”, different levels of knowledge were revealed between the teams, 2 teams showed a high level, scoring 40–49 points in the overall standings, 2 – average, 35 points and 2 – low, 19–25 points. As a result, team No. 3 won the overall standings with a total of 121.8 points, team No. 2 was in second place with a total of 119 points, and team No. 4 was in third place with 104.4 points.
